“Disclosure: This rum mango mint julep recipe is brought to you in collaboration with TheBarInsiders.com community and Zacapa® 23. I received compensation to develop this recipe though all opinions are my own.”

National Mint Julep Day is this May 30 so why not celebrating with a Rum Mango Mint Julep, a latino version inspired on the traditional Mint Julep cocktail. But what is a Mint Julep, this is a Southern favorite, a cocktail that dates from the 1800’s but no one has an exact date on when this libation was created. This cocktail is made of five ingredients: mint leaves, bourbon, sugar, crushed ice and water. And historically has been served on pewter or silver cups to keep the beverage cold. Each year almost 120,000 Mint Juleps are served at the Kentucky Derby weekend.

Taking this Southern favorite as an inspiration I decided to create my latino version of a mint julep but using Zacapa® 23 a fine rum from Guatemala, fresh mint from my garden, turbinado sugar and fresh mango puree which is now in season and lots of ice.

INGREDIENTS
For Rum Mango Mint Julep:
- 3 cups crushed ice
- 2 tablespoons Zacapa rum (one tablespoon per glass/cocktail/serving)
- 1 cup simple sugar syrup with mint
- 1/2 cup fresh mango puree
- 2 sprigs fresh mint
- 2 glasses for Old Fashion
For the simple syrup:
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup turbinado sugar or sugar on the raw
- 1 teaspoon mint extract

Method: Prepare the simple syrup first placing all ingredients on a small pot and cook until sugar is dissolved. Pour the syrup into a jar and refrigerate. To prepare the Rum Mango Mint Julep first add a layer of crushed ice and a tablespoon of rum. Then add a spoonful of mango puree and stir. Add a second layer of ice and pour mint simple syrup. Add another tablespoon of mango puree and garnish with a sprig of mint. This recipe makes two servings.
A mint julep is like a snow cone for adults. The ice is very important component to make the perfect cocktail. It might seem like a lot of ice yet it is a perfect addition for a drink to enjoy on a sunny hot day. You can serve with a straw or use the mint sprig to stir and sip. This Rum Mango Mint Julep with Zacapa rum is a delightful combination and very refreshing. The addition of the mango and the turbinado sugar mint syrup along with the crushed ice makes it a sweet slushy delight.

Just make sure to sip slowly and enjoy with moderation. I invite you to try my Rum Mango Mint Julep and celebrate with me National Mint Julep Day this upcoming Saturday, May 30. This cocktail is perfect for entertaining at home and if you are planning your own Kentucky Derby themed party. Zacapa® 23 rum can be served straight up or on the rocks that is why is the perfect ingredient for a Mint Julep and an alternative option to bourbon. Zacapa is a high end rum and the first brand to be inducted into the International Rum Festival’s Hall of Fame.
Happy National Mint Julep Day!
Enjoy with moderation and do not drink and drive.
