“Disclosure: This article is brought to you in collaboration with TheBarInsiders.com community and Zacapa® 23. I received a bottle of rum to be able to develop this recipe though all opinions are my own.”
La Cuba Libre cocktail is a very traditional beverage in our latino culture, this cocktail is a combination of rum and cola with a twist of lemon and was invented in the 1900s in Havana, Cuba. La cuba libre cocktail or also called “cubita” in my home country Mexico was a common adult beverage to offer in parties at home. For mother’s day we would celebrate with a big lunch and all the generations will gather to celebrate all our moms starting with la mamá grande my great grandmother Doña Carlotita, Mamá Licha my grandmother and my mom Rosa Elena. We would have a beautiful table decorated with roses and many different dishes like chicken mole, Mexican rice and guacamole.
When I was asked to test rum Zacapa® 23 the flavor and aromatic notes of this rum brought me back home and to my latino roots. Zacapa rum is produced by one of the only female Master Blenders in the world, Lorena Vásquez.
A Nicaraguan by birth, she has a degree in chemistry, food technology and business administration and moved to Guatemala after she married. There she joined Zacapa Quality Control department, where she developed her innate sensitivity to scents and flavors. Lorena is passionate about the art of crafting premium rum and is driven in her quest for perfection.
This rum is smooth and can be served straight up or on the rocks, but I am suggesting to use for a high quality Cuba Libre Cocktail inspired in the original from Havana, Cuba. I have added fresh mint that complements really well the bouquet of this fine rum with the cola and the lemon twist.
- 1 1/2 cups of ice
- 3 tablespoons or 1.5 ounces of Zacapa rum
- 1/2 lime
- 3 cups of cola
- 1 lime cut in rounds
- 3 fresh mint sprigs
- 3 glasses
Method: Add the ice evenly to each glass, then add 1 tablespoon of rum per glass and few lime juice drops. Pour the soda and garnish with lime rounds and fresh mint. This recipe makes 3 cocktails.
Zacapa® is one of the finest and most celebrated rums in the world and is produced in the verdant land of Guatemala. The Zacapa rum flavor profile is the result of a unique combination of soil, climate and natural materials brought together with skilled distillation and a special high altitude aging process at one and a half miles above sea level. In addition to many awards and high ratings from influential media, Zacapa has the honor of being the first brand to be inducted into the International Rum Festival’s Hall of Fame.
