Florida watermelon is now in season. Perfect for making fruit drinks and watermelon juice. And what you need to make this summer even sweeter.

Who doesn’t love the sweet taste of a sun ripen watermelon grown with love?

Watermelon is a summer staple; we eat it as is, in desserts, in salads, on ice pops, fruit drinks, and even margaritas!

But did you know you can make watermelon juice?

The recipe only requires one ingredient, fresh sweet watermelon

It is so simple and doesn’t require much. The trick is to choose a sweet watermelon, and that has ripened naturally in the soil ā€” no need to add water nor sugar.

How to choose the perfect Florida watermelon for watermelon juice?

Look for a Florida watermelon that is the correct size. I tend to buy medium to smaller fruits. However, small or large, the watermelon fruit must feel heavy.

We had the chance to visit the farm and learn more about the harvest

When choosing the watermelon, look for the one that has a prominent bright yellow spot. That spot is indicating the watermelon has ripened and fruit is sweet.

When examining the Florida watermelon, look at the webbing. The watermelon will have brown spots forming pattern of a web.

The more webbing the best, because it means the bees pollinated the watermelon flower several times, resulting in a sweeter fruit.

We visited the local supermarket to buy local produce to make the natural fruit drink

Look for the Florida watermelon stem or tail. That tail should be brown, not green. If it is green, the watermelon is not ripe. A good watermelon is the one allowed to mature on the vine.

Another tip is to give the Florida watermelon a thump. The sound generated must be a deep hollow sound. Unripe watermelon has a dull sound.

Some people think watermelons have a gender. Round ones are females, and elongated ones are males. We do not know if this is true; however, in our experience, smaller rounded fruits tend to be sweeter and easier to handle and cut.

Alternatively you can add lime juice for a citrus note

Using the proper tools and knives to cut the sweet watermelon makes the task easier. Look for watermelon tools here on Amazon.

Enjoy Florida watermelon juice as part of your daily routine.

Making Florida watermelon juice is an easy task. We used a seedless watermelon. If you purchased one with seeds remove them before making the juice.

Watermelon seeds cloud the juice and transform it into colloidal texture the day after. Make sure to remove them all.

Clean the watermelon before cutting with soap and running water.

Refreshing watermelon juice to cheer for the summer

Cut the fruit in half and then introduce a sharp knife to cut chunks. Add the fruit to the blender.

Blend the fruit in high. There is no need to add water or sugar.

Pour the watermelon juice in a bottle with a cap using a funnel and refrigerate. The juice has a better flavor when maintained cooled.

The juice will be fresh for three days when kept refrigerated and stored in a proper container or glass bottle with a cap.

Florida watermelon is now in season. Perfect for making fruit drinks and watermelon juice. And what you need to make this summer even sweeter.
