This salsa is one of the must-haves on your recipe box. Everyone I know loves Mexican salsa served with chips and paired with a cold beer or a margarita.

America runs on chips and salsa, don’t you think so?

Any celebration needs a chips and salsa fun appetizer and for that, an easy Mexican salsa restaurant style is in order.

This recipe has tomatoes on the vine, serrano peppers, garlic, fresh cilantro, and the secret ingredient: seasoned tomato sauce in a can.

Using canned tomato sauce makes the salsa sweeter and preserves longer in the fridge. Just make sure to keep in inside a mason jar with a lid or on a plastic container that has a sealing lid.

This salsa will remain fresh for at least four days and it is a fantastic spicy tomato sauce to use in other dishes, such as huevos rancheros, tomato enchiladas. As a garnish for carne asada, tacos, sopes, molletes, and almost anything you want to add hot sauce.

Those hot sauce could go from mild to very hot. Some will be smoky due to the use of dried peppers. And others will be fresh and combined with fruits instead of tomatoes.

We love all the Mexican salsas, but our favorites are those that roast the ingredients first. The roasting or grilling gives a rustic flavor which is a staple of an authentic Mexican hot sauce.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 tomatoes
  • 6 serrano peppers
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1/2 white onion
  • 1 cup seasoned tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 bunch cilantro

Instructions
 

  • Roast the tomatoes with the peppers, garlic and the onion.
  • Place the roasted veggies in the blender and add the water, the tomato sauce, and the cilantro.
  • Blend for a chunky texture.
  • Pour on a bowl and enjoy with chips.
