LATINO AMERICANS is a story of immigration and renovation, and the anguish and celebration that Hispanics have faced to achieve a better life for themselves and their families. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage month me and my family are following these series on PBS to learn about our Latino heritage and to value what we have now. In today’s episode we learned about the commitment of Mexican Americans like Macario Garcia was the first Mexican immigrant to receive the Medal of Honor, highest military condecoration along with an award for his heroic actions as a soldier during World War II. He was considered a hero though he was refused service in a local restaurant in Texas. From that time till now we have come a long way though still there is a lot to be done regarding equality and recognition of the Latino community as an important contributor to America. That is why it is so important to take the high road and educate ourselves and our children. In my opinion acceptance and respect are the key for living in peace and creating community.
